Jim McKinley: A Mentor, Leader and Friend in the Elevator Industry

After an extraordinary 60-year career in the elevator industry, Jim McKinley retired from Delaware Elevator, Inc. (DEI), leaving behind a legacy of leadership, technical expertise and mentorship.

Affectionately known as “Mr. Jim,” McKinley began his career with Turnbull Elevator and Southeastern Elevator in Georgia. He joined Delaware Elevator in the early 1970s after being hired by company founder Charles Meeks, Sr. Following positions with U.S. Elevator and American Elevator, he returned to DEI as the company expanded in the late 1980s. Before retiring, he served as senior vice president.

Throughout his career, McKinley held nearly every type of leadership and technical position in the elevator industry, including elevator technician, branch manager, construction and modernization manager, inspector and vice president. He also operated his own elevator inspection business, trained generations of elevator professionals and contributed to initiatives through the National Association of Elevator Contractors.

McKinley believed that even as elevator technology evolved, there was no substitute for a knowledgeable, well-trained technician. That philosophy continues to influence Delaware Elevator’s commitment to employee training, technical education and exceptional service. He also played an important role in DEI’s growth and its expansion into elevator manufacturing.

More than a respected elevator expert, McKinley was a mentor, educator, father figure and trusted friend to employees throughout the Delaware Elevator family. His knowledge, patience and dedication helped shape countless careers and contributed significantly to the company’s continued success.
